Content only matters if people find it

I’d been pouring real work into a fly-tying site, The Fly Bench, and content like that only matters if people find it, and the way anglers find things is Google. So I went hunting for a high-intent search I could actually own. The one I landed on is about as unglamorous as it gets. People trying to find a fly shop.

Because finding a fly shop is a genuine pain. Head somewhere new to fish and you’re stuck digging through old forum threads and squinting at a map that buries the two real shops under a dozen bait stores and places that closed years ago. None of them sorted by the thing that matters, the water you’re fishing.

The data was the whole job

River & Run is a directory of 1,019 fly shops, guides, and outfitters across all 50 states. Every listing carries the stuff you’d want before you call: the Google rating and review count, the phone, the website, the brands they stock, the waters they guide, what they target, plus their social and any video they post.

No one hand-compiles a thousand shops. So I built a data pipeline that does it and can re-run to stay fresh. It seeds from open map data, searches each state, then runs a cheap Claude pass to throw out the noise (bait shops, big-box sporting goods, anything that isn’t really a fly shop). From there it scrapes each shop’s own site for the brands and waters and a blurb, pulls their video, and folds it all into one clean dataset. Every stage picks up where it left off, so a run that dies halfway doesn’t start over. And it watches for shops that close, because one dead listing and anglers stop trusting the whole thing.

SEO was the point

Every shop, every town, every river, state, and species is its own page a search engine can find and read. Each one carries the structured data that tells Google exactly what it’s looking at, a fly shop, a river, a town. The site says yes to AI crawlers, ships a sitemap, the works. Someone types “fly shops near the Madison” at 11pm the night before a trip and lands on it.

Static and fast, because slow pages don’t rank. The search runs right in your browser, no server to wait on. Hit Cmd+K and start typing. Even the state maps are drawn as plain shapes, no map service, no API key.

The directory is the top of the funnel

An angler comes looking for a shop, and on the way they hit fly-tying patterns matched to the exact river they’re fishing, plus gear links. The tying content points at The Fly Bench; the gear points at retail partners.
